48 Hours in Rome: Weekend Itinerary
June 12 2026 – Willie Howard
Rome is best done like a layered walk: ancient ruins in the morning, espresso between stops, piazzas at golden hour, and pasta after dark.
Quick Plan
Best base: Centro Storico, Monti, Trastevere, or Prati
Transport: Walk + metro/taxi when needed. ATAC’s official 72-hour pass is €22; useful for a weekend with airport/outer-neighborhood movement.
Book ahead: Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Pantheon. Colosseum opens at 8:30 a.m.; Vatican Museums generally run Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; Pantheon is usually 9 a.m.–7 p.m.
Note: Close-up access to the Trevi Fountain basin now has a €2 tourist fee during set daytime hours.
